Anti-Racism Toolkit
What is Anti-Racism?
Anti-racism is defined as proactive work to identify, challenge, and change policies, structures, and behaviors that perpetuate racial inequity. In healthcare, this ensures that race, ethnicity, or background never determines quality of care (Williams & Cooper, 2019; Macias-Konstantopoulos, et al., 2023).
Why it matters in healthcare
Patients of color are less likely to receive adequate pain relief for the same symptoms causing needless suffering (Hood, (2025))
Dermatology education underrepresents darker skin tones, leading to diagnostic challenges (Diao & Adamson, 2022)
Healthcare professionals from underrepresented racial groups report barriers in recruitment, promotion, and recognition (Venkataraman et al., 2024; Pardhan et al., 2025)
Core elements of the toolkit
Identify bias – Audit clinical pathways, case materials, and recruitment processes.
Educate teams – Deliver structured training on structural racism with case-based scenarios (Drwecki, 2015)
Audit systems – Collect data on patient outcomes and workforce demographics where legally possible
Accountability – Establish DEI committees with authority to recommend changes and track progress
Celebrate representation – Showcase diverse professionals and patient experiences in education and communication
Practical applications in healthcare
Bias recognition workshops for clinical staff (Drwecki, 2015)
Diverse case libraries and mannequins in medical and nursing education
Annual DEI reports to track representation, outcomes, and progress
Inclusive recruitment and promotion policies to reduce inequities in career advancement
