Defining DE&I

Diversity

Refers to the presence of differences within a given setting. In healthcare, diversity includes variations in gender, race, ethnicity, skin tone, language, age, sexual orientation, disability, religion, socioeconomic status, and professional background. It represents who is in the room - patients, professionals, and communities.

Equity

Means ensuring fair treatment, access, and opportunities by recognizing that not everyone starts from the same place. In healthcare, equity involves identifying and removing barriers that create unequal health outcomes, so that care is not just equal, but fair.

Inclusion

Is the practice of creating environments where all people feel respected, valued, and able to fully participate. In healthcare, inclusion means that differences are not only present but are actively engaged, shaping research, policy, clinical practice, and team culture.

Diversity is who is represented. Equity is how fairness is ensured. Inclusion is how those differences are valued and engaged.
